Hello,
I need help in choosing the appropriate technology for the application that I'm going to be creating.
The characteristics of the system that have been decided until now:
Standalone app built on either Flex/Flash/AIR
Restricted to using the system on a single computer, hence can be a tightly coupled system
The server component of the system needs to be closed source and robust, for which im thinking something like a Java backend, etc, etc.
In a completely new environment, all that i need to be able to do is install just the AIR application and not worry about installing extra stuff for the server support.

Thanks In Advance for anyone who can help me out with this.

Hello, that's for sure very interesting !
Being able to know about your architecture while in the same time testing it live is just amazing, and by the way your application is just fabulous. Now you have to make your community, but that's an other issue :)

Still i have a question: i'm let's say evaluating different solutions to make my own multiplayer game using flex, and the need for real-time and server push drove me into LCDS. All comparisons i read between LCDS and BlazeDS indicated that LCDS was the way to go, for example for its RTMP support.
Now, looking at the new LCDS licence policy (only dev plateform is free, no more single-cpu stuff or so), i was wondering how a company running a (for now) small business as the chessjam one could afford LCDS ???
If i follow you well, upgrading to CF9 will leave you with this choice:
- either you go with free BlazeDS and you won't benefite anymore from RTMP and all other cool features (it has been clearly made by Adobe that there's no plan for BlazeDS to support RTMP),
- either you go with the new LCDS, thus being forced to upgrade your old single-cpu licence, which i feel would cost a lot.
I'm refering to http://anilchannappa.org/2009/11/20/lcds-3-0-released/ to assume that.

Could you please share your thoughts on this ? Or did i misunderstood something ?
Thx,

Jahz

There are several good resources out there. Of course there is http://adobe.com/devnet and http://tv.adobe.com

For LCDS, I recommend http://coenraets.org/blog/, http://www.jamesward.com/ and http://devgirl.wordpress.com. Holly did a great intro post at http://devgirl.wordpress.com/2009/06/16/livecycle-data-services-lcds-quick-start/ followed by http://devgirl.wordpress.com/2009/07/14/livecycle-data-services-channels-and-endpoints-explained/

For Flex and Flex+LCDS, check out Tour de Flex at http://flex.org/tour

Ben Forta did an excellent Adobe TV video on CF+Flex at http://tv.adobe.com/watch/adc-presents/building-flex-applications-powered-by-coldfusion

I have tried the new data-centric development stuff in Flex 4 and CF9 but I'm more familiar with old-school DB creation, etc. and I wanted to go with what I was comfortable with. Also, when we started ChessJam, Flex 4 was in its infancy.

We will upgrade to CF9 soon. The improved remoting along with some of the new cfscript support is appealing. I might also look at upgrading to LCDS3 to get the reliable messaging support. We're doing our own retry/verify code now.

Thanks!

What resources did you use to learn LCDS + Flex & CF? I'm having a hard time learning them.

Have you looked into Data-Centric-Development with Flex Builder 4? Would it have helped your app in any way?

Will you guys consider upgrading to CF9? Flex remoting performance has increased significantly, but not sure if there'll be any improvement with LCDS 2.6.1.
