So now you want to develop Flash Lite Content for Windows Mobile?
Over the weekend, the news broke that Microsoft is licensing the Flash Lite 3 player and Reader LE for Windows Mobile. I’m not a Flash Lite expert, but I’m suddenly curious. I’m sure that there are many of you out there like me that have never built anything for Flash Lite but are suddenly interested now that the potential audience just increased by millions of devices!
.
.
.
So, I’ve put together some good links as starting points for those of you new to Flash Lite:
- Flash Lite Product Page
- Flash Lite and Flash Player version comparison Page
- Flash Lite and Flash Player full feature comparison Document (PDF)
- Mobile and Devices Developer Center
- Getting Started Guide to Creating Mobile content with Flash Lite
- Getting Started Whitepaper on Flash Lite (PDF)
- Mobile and Devices Home Page
- Adobe Tools for building Mobile Apps
- Online video tutorials for building mobile applications
- Various Flash Lite Tutorials and Articles from Biskero.org
By the way, you don’t have to wait on Microsoft to release a new version of Windows Mobile to play around with in a browser. There are already two great browsers for Windows Mobile that already support Flash Lite today:
- Skyfire – now starting a 2nd round of beta testing – sign up!
- Opera Mobile
I’m seeing more and more interest in using Mobile devices for enterprise connected applications so I’ll be tracking this.

Ciao,
if you are looking for some tutorials, here is a list:

I’m not sure about Skyfire or Opera Mobile… from reading their materials, it looks like they do a serverside transcoding of web content and deliver something else to the final viewing device.
I’m glad to hear of your interest in delivering to multiple device types though, and thanks for the link roundup!

Skyfire supports real flash content locally in the browser. Details at http://www.skyfire.com/product Flash Lite 3.0 is embedded in the browser itself.
Starting with Opera Mobile 9.5, support is provided for true Flash Lite 3.0 as well – http://www.opera.com/b2b/file/Opera_Mobile_Product_Sheet.pdf
Thanks!

JD – I think you may be correct on Skyfire so we’ll we’re even
I just watched a demo at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPLV7fzyr5M
You’ll notice that Flash 9 content is playing on the mobile screen which is not possible using a mobile flash player at this point in time..so they are doing some “server magic”.
Either way, Skyfire looks interesting. I’m signed up for the beta…we’ll see how it works in the real world soon.
Thanks again,
Greg

Although Flash Lite has been available for Windows Mobile for awhile this official licensing should bring it some much needed attention. Funny thing is I was just thinking about this the other day and wondered why there weren’t more applications developed for it. Now this!
